Werneth Lodge No: 6163 was consecrated (i.e. founded) in October 1945, just as the Second World War was ending. Its founding members were members of existing lodges based in Oldham and consisted of local shopkeepers, solicitors, accountants and tradesmen. The Lodge originally met at Freemasons Hall, Union St, Oldham until 2008 when that building closed. The Lodge then moved to Middleton Masonic Hall where it still meets. Middleton Masonic Hall, also known as The Pavilion, has excellent
transport links and is modern and spacious with ample free parking. It is also a popular venue for events such as weddings receptions, craft fairs etc.
The Lodge meets on the first Wednesday of every month in October, November, December, February, March, April, May and June. Our meetings (which usually start at 6:30 pm) are formal events to discuss the business of the lodge and then conduct any Masonic ceremonies that are scheduled. Attendees are expected to wear a dark suit, white shirt, and black, or other suitable tie. We pride ourselves on conducting this part of the evening to a consistently high standard. Every member is afforded the opportunity to become better at what they enjoy doing.
Our formal meeting is then followed by a meal – known as our Social Board – which is also held within the Masonic Hall and to which all members, our visitors and guests are invited. Our meals are very friendly and convivial affairs – whilst we take what we do in the Lodge room seriously, we do not take ourselves too seriously!
In preparation for our normal lodge meetings we hold practice nights on the Thursday prior to such meetings – commencing at 8:00 pm and usually lasting around one hour. All members are expected to attend these practice nights. Attendance may also be required at additional ad hoc meetings.
In addition to our formal meetings we hold several social events throughout the year – treasure hunts, quiz nights, visits out etc.
