About this Lodge

Our Lodge takes its name from the Palatine Hotel which was built as a railway hotel next to Hunts Bank, near Manchester Victoria station. By 1911 the Palatine Hotel had closed for business, the buildings were acquired by the Trustees of Chetham’s Charity and became part of the newly founded Chetham’s School of Music. The hotel was finally demolished in 2017.  The Lodge was consecrated in January 1893 and continued to meet in the Palatine Buildings until moving to other Manchester hotels and hostelries including The Midland, eventually finding a permanent home at Manchester Masonic Temple.

It was a successful lodge with, in excess of forty members including several Grand Lodge Officers.  Over time, as the manner of working in Manchester  changed, and members died with no new recruits, the numbers fell to single figures.  It was resolved by the remaining Brethren that Palatine would survive. We abandoned the new ideas and returned to excellence in the Lodge room and a very convivial Festive Board.  We also started assisting Lodges unable to fill offices or ritual; when eventually some of them closed some of the more enthusiastic members joined us.

Eventually, with members dying or moving away, costs rising, un-repaired furniture and fittings, lack of organisation, and unaffordable food prices it was resolved to relocate to Middleton which is all that Manchester was not. We moved with just SIX members, but all of good spirit and commitment and we are now a lodge of SEVENTEEN.

During the pandemic we have had monthly Webex meetings and a very active WhatsApp forum but normally we have eight meetings a year with the same number of rehearsals and practices.  In addition, we have annual meetings for all the Brethren to discuss the schedule for the coming year and the progressions for the following years.  Meetings are very well attended, rehearsals well attended, practices sometimes concentrate on wider aspects.  Fees are £360.00p.a. to cover all but the Installation and the members’ meetings.

We have a commitment to perform our ceremonies to the very highest standard and this includes demonstration ceremonies from Israel, Germany, and two from the USA.  The Festive Board is full of camaraderie and a good deal of mickey taking.  One of the American ceremonies was demonstrated elsewhere in East Lancashire and as far as the Provinces of West Lancashire, West Yorkshire, and Derbyshire and helped Palatine Lodge raise £2,447 to donate to the recent festival.

With determination, faith, and a plan which predates the Pathway by many years, it has been possible to improve the prospects of our Lodge. It is not inconceivable that if our plan were replicated, the same can be accomplished elsewhere.
