About this Lodge

The Lodge of Prudence 219 was founded in 1774 and is fast approaching its 250th anniversary. Originally meeting in Leigh, it moved to Todmorden to meet at the Queens Hotel prior to the opening of the Todmorden Masonic Hall in 1864 – the first purpose built Masonic Hall in the Province of East Lancashire. The Masonic Hall is now a Grade II listed building.
The Lodge has been home to numerous notable local historical figures, with many members of the Fielden and Ormerod families being active Freemasons over the years.

Prudence 219 proudly retains the original workings and ceremonies from 1774, with kind permission from the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).

Meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Todmorden Masonic Hall, White Hart Fold, in the centre of Todmorden, we hold 9 meetings per year, closing for the summer months. Our Installation is held in January. Annual fees are £200 and meetings consist of a business meeting with activities in the lodge room, followed by a social meal with attendees. The average cost of the meal is £12.

Due to the age of the Lodge, our key focus is maintaining the authenticity and integrity of our long-standing rituals and ceremonies, ensuring that the workings are passed on to the next generation of Masons. Due to the current size of the lodge, newer members tend to take positions of office at an early stage of their masonic career, however there is strong formal and informal mentoring support structure within the lodge.

Officers and members are encouraged to attend one or two practices per month in addition to the regular lodge meeting.
We are not however, a serious scholarly lodge where mistakes are reprimanded and frowned upon. We make mistakes, laugh and joke with each other and make ritual and ceremonial work genuinely enjoyable to both take part in and experience.
Members

The Lodge of Prudence currently has 22 subscribing members, with around half regularly attending lodge meetings. Members come from a diverse background and have a wide range of interests. Our older, retired members are keen golfers who attend numerous lodges as visitors. We have several tradesmen as members as well as business owners, analysts and consultants. Our younger members all have young families, ranging from nursery aged children through to secondary school age.

Outside of the lodge and employment, our members enjoy Scooter rallies, rifle shooting, football and supporting youth organisations such as Scouting. Geographically, our members live from St Annes to Leeds (with some members based in Todmorden itself), and some travel for several hours to attend lodge meetings.
