About this Lodge

Ben Brierley Lodge No 3317 is a Lodge in in the Eastern Area, itself within the Masonic Province of East Lancashire. It is a progressive and very friendly Lodge and has its roots as a Lodge of excellent Ritual. We meet eight times a year at the Middleton Masonic Club on the second Monday evening of February thru May, September, November and December. Our annual Installation meeting takes place on the second Saturday in October.

Founded in 1908 and named after Failsworth’s most famous son, the self-educated Lancashire dialect poet, Mason and Manchester City Councillor Benjamin Brierley, the Lodge has flourished for over 100 years. It originally met at the Mowbray Club in Failsworth, moving to the Union Club in Oldham in 1950, before settling at the Masonic Club in Middleton in 1958.

Since its formation, the Lodge has given its name to Ben Brierley Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in 1936, and Ben Brierley Lodge of Instruction in 1947, and that is attended by Masons from other Lodges as well as our own.

Along with the regular meetings, we also meet socially for a Christmas Party and hold a Ladies’ Evening in May. There are other informal gathering during the year between some or all the Lodge members where friends and family can be invited. Some of our Lodge members also travel to London every year in April to attend United Grand Lodge for the annual Investiture.

Our Lodge currently has nineteen subscribing members and has traditionally been made up of local men from a variety of different backgrounds and occupations, many of whom have brought in their brothers and sons. Our ages range from 87 to 33, with a relatively young mean age of 51.

The Lodge has a good mix of experienced members and more recent and younger members who will no doubt secure the Lodge’s future. Ritual in the Lodge is encouraged among newer Masons, but a meeting’s work is always shared. We recognize that Masons lead busy lives and their talents do not solely lie in delivering Masonic Ritual. Every Mason in Ben Brierley Lodge is encouraged to progress through Lodge Offices regardless of their aptitude in this area.

It is difficult to put into words what it is like to be a member of Ben Brierley Lodge in 2024. Warmth, friendship, banter, respect, camaraderie, laughter, kindness, brotherly love. A time for seriousness and a time for hilarity, the balance of which Ben Brierley Lodge has close to perfect.
